This issue threatens to derail Democrats’ 2020 chances, the Vermont socialist warns.
And you won’t believe what he thinks is going to defeat them next year.
So Bernie Sanders issues this shocking warning to Democrats.
Bernie Sanders, the self-described socialist who has a long history of shock politics, shocked even his most ardent supporters this week with a stern warning.
Speaking at a CNN town hall event, Sanders said that while he fully supports further investigations into Trump and possible obstruction charges, he also said he is very worried and issued a warning.
Sanders said he is very concerned that Democrats are going to abandon the “issues Americans care most about” if the Democrats in Congress move to impeach the President.
“If for the next year or year and a half, going right into the heart of the election, all that the Congress is talking about is impeaching Trump, and Trump, Trump, Trump and Mueller, Mueller, Mueller, and we’re not talking about health care, we’re not talking about raising the minimum wage … we’re not talking about combating climate change … and all of the issues that concern ordinary Americans, I worry that works to Trump’s advantage,” Sanders said.
In other words, Sanders believes the best way to victory for the Democrats is to focus on those “wildly popular” issues like higher taxes, government-run health care, higher costs for all Americans and getting rid of the 2nd Amendment.
Of course this is the same Bernie Sanders who, during the same town hall, said the Boston bomber deserves the right to vote from his prison cell.
During Monday’s town hall, Harvard University student Anne Carlstein asked the Socialist Sanders to explain his position on having convicted felons vote while still in jail.
“Does this mean that you would support enfranchising people like the Boston Marathon bomber, a convicted terrorist and murderer? Do you think that those convicted of sexual assault should have the opportunity to vote for politicians who could have a direct impact on women’s rights?” she asked.
Sanders, not missing a beat, said it is his strong belief that in a democracy everyone has the right to vote, no matter what they have done.
Sanders continued, “Here is my view. If somebody commits a serious crime, sexual assault, murder, they’re going to be punished. They may be in jail for 10 years, 20 years, 50 years, their whole lives. That’s what happens when you commit a serious crime.
“But, I think the right to vote is inherent to our democracy. Yes, even for terrible people, because once you start chipping away and you say, ‘That guy committed a terrible crime, not gonna let him vote. Well, that person did that. Not gonna let that person vote,’ you’re running down a slippery slope,” he said.
Even CNN host Chris Cuomo seemed taken aback by this, saying the Senator had just written a good opposition ad against himself.
Sanders continued to harp on the idea that “in a democracy” and saying “this is a democracy.” Of course he is dead wrong. The United States is a Republic, not a democracy.
With still over a year to go until the nominees are chosen, it appears Socialist Sanders is going to make this interesting.
