Parents Forced to Take Drastic Measures Due to Current College Tuition System

It’s a hard truth that parents face from the moment their first child is born – college is expensive.

With federal aid programs and thousands of private sector resources available, one would think paying for college wouldn’t be too difficult.

But the fact of the matter is parents are being forced to take drastic measures due to the current college tuition system.

Financial aid programs are drying up, and the collegiate system only wants to help the students who will make their statistics look good to the federal agencies funding their programs.

So, if there’s one thing more frustrating than trying to get your child accepted into the college of their choice, it’s figuring out how to pay for it.

Many parents share tips on this topic on Facebook, Reddit, and other online communities.

The best advice they give is to plan ahead and start saving the moment your child is born.

Other parents suggest moving money around from one sibling’s savings to pay for another sibling’s current college tuition or taking out a second mortgage.

But the current university tuition costs are forcing parents to take even more drastic measures – like marrying their children off or getting divorced.

Students of divorced parents only have to account for one parent’s household income – not both.

And students who are married obviously don’t have to account for their parents’ income at all, as they’re considered independent students.

While some parents on these Facebook and Reddit groups are joking, others are actually willing to do whatever is necessary to get their child into a “prestigious” college or university.

In Illinois, an investigation by ProPublica Illinois and the Wall Street Journal found that some families were actually giving up legal custody of their children in order to label them as “independent.”

The financial aid meant for families who truly need government assistance was given to these scammers instead.

Fortunately, the University of Illinois referred the families to the U.S. Department of Education, which in turn rescinded the financial aid awarded.

It’s hard to imagine taking such extreme measures to put your child through college, but when it comes to securing your child’s future, what wouldn’t you do as a parent?

College has never been more expensive, and students are graduating with outrageous amounts of debt as they are more frequently turning to private student loan companies such as Sallie Mae.

The college tuition system is both incredibly biased and incredibly flawed, and millions of young Americans every day are applying for financial assistance that just isn’t available.

In this day and age, a bachelor’s degree is no longer enough to secure a high-paying job with enough income to pay off all student loans and live somewhat comfortably.

Paying for that first college degree is one of the biggest hurdles American high school graduates face—-and yet, little thought is given to what happens when the student is out in the real world with a degree that can’t get them a job and more debt than their parents had when they bought their first home.

And marrying off your barely legal adult child, or ruining your own marriage, or giving up rights to your child are all things that should be considered going a step too far.

Something has to change, and more government involvement is not the answer.

One thought is to require universities that receives state or federal aid to use part of that funding to help offset student debt or at the very least tuition.

What do you think we need to do to fix the college tuition system?
