Leaders of the old Soviet Union always said America would fall from within.
And they were right!
Because now these government mandates are killing freedom, shredding the Constitution, and could mean the end of our Republic.
Thomas Jefferson famously said, “There is no justification for taking away an individual’s freedom in the guise of public safety.”
This was a somewhat revised version of Benjamin Franklin’s quote, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
Americans would be wise to listen to our Founding Fathers on this one before it’s too late.
Recently, I attended a church service in Jefferson’s home state of Virginia, considered by many to be the true ‘Cradle of Liberty’ in the founding of our nation.
It was the Virginians after all, led by Jefferson and John Madison, who established the Bill of Rights.
So imagine my horror to walk into a church and be immediately hit with huge signs demanding I follow the Governor’s mandates on masks, social distancing, and other regulations.
Imagine my utter disappointment to head into the sanctuary – only to be told that half of it was blocked off in compliance with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s regulations on worship services.
And worse, to be told I couldn’t sit next to friends of mine because of, well, the social distancing requirements of the “state.”
But the real topper was watching the pastor yell at congregants standing in line to give their tithe – because they were too close together!
And it’s even worse at other public places.
I recently ventured into Charlottesville, where I spent my college years at Mr. Jefferson’s Academical Village – or better known as the University of Virginia.
The university grounds were appalling. Everyone was walking around outside – with masks on!
All because of some mandate.
In fact, students have to register on an app just to walk on the grounds (UVA does not have a campus, it has “grounds”).
It’s scary how many Americans are happily ready to give up their basic liberties for what is not even real safety.
Remember when it was 15 days to flatten the curve?
Then it was don’t wear masks because they don’t work, wait, masks do work, well not those masks but these masks, no wait, only these masks work, and on and on on.
Now Americans are clamoring to take a vaccine that is 70%-90% effective for a virus they have a 99% chance of surviving.
In the meantime, the governor of Oregon has announced lockdowns and other emergency efforts in effect through March, while rioters and criminals run free in the streets.
In D.C., the mayor has announced the closure of all indoor dining and other draconian measures, while crime and homelessness skyrockets.
And in New York City, police go door-to-door looking for Jews who might be violating DeBlasio’s orders, while assaults on citizens go unpunished.
We very-well may be witnessing the slow death of our great Republic. But not from a foreign enemy – but from enemies within.
Because Americans have been told to live in fear. We should heed these other words from Thomas Jefferson: “When the people are afraid of the government, that’s tyranny. But when the government is afraid of the people, that’s liberty.”
Today, we have tyranny.
